  1. Règle générale : cardinal + -th (seven → seventh, hundred → hundredth, million → millionth).
  2. Exceptions : one → first, two → second, three → third.
  3. Orthographe : five → fifth, twelve → twelfth, eight → eighth, nine → ninth.
  4. Dizaines : le y devient ie : twenty → twentieth, forty → fortieth, ninety → ninetieth.
  5. Nombres composés : seul le dernier élément devient ordinal : twenty-first, one hundred and second, two thousand and fifth.

  • 1st, 21st, 31st, 101st (first) ;
  • 2nd, 22nd, 42nd (second) ;
  • 3rd, 23rd, 53rd (third) ;

C’est l’emploi le plus courant : the first of May, May 1st.

On écrit un chiffre romain et on lit un ordinal précédé de the : Elizabeth II = Elizabeth the Second ; Henry VIII = Henry the Eighth ; Louis XIV = Louis the Fourteenth.

The 21st century (le XXIe siècle), the eighteenth century.

She came first (elle est arrivée première), our tenth anniversary, my twenty-first birthday.

First of all signifie « tout d’abord ». Voir aussi les mots de liaison.

Mini-exercice corrigé

Écrivez l’ordinal en lettres puis en abrégé.

  1. 5 → fifth, 5th.
  2. 12 → twelfth, 12th.
  3. 22 → twenty-second, 22nd.
  4. 40 → fortieth, 40th.
  5. 103 → one hundred and third, 103rd.
  6. 11 → eleventh, 11th.

The first et the last. « L’avant-dernier » se dit the last but one ou the second to last ; « l’antépénultième », the third to last.

Faut-il mettre the devant l’ordinal ?

Généralement oui : the second chapter, the third time. Mais on dit at first (au début), come first (arriver premier), first prize dans certaines expressions figées.

Comment lire « Chapter 3 » ou « World War II » ?

Chapter three (cardinal après le nom) et World War Two (cardinal aussi), mais the Second World War (ordinal avant le nom).
