There is et there are
« Il y a » se dit there is devant un nom singulier ou indénombrable (there is a cat, there is milk) et there are devant un pluriel (there are two cats). Be se conjugue à tous les temps.
Mis à jour le 4 min de lecture
There is et there are signalent l’existence ou la présence de quelque chose : There’s a cat in the garden (Il y a un chat dans le jardin).
|---|---|---|---|
| singulier | There is (There’s) a book. | There isn’t a book. / There’s no book. | Is there a book? |
| indénombrable | There is some milk. | There isn’t any milk. | Is there any milk? |
| pluriel | There are some books. | There aren’t any books. / There are no books. | Are there any books? |
Réponses courtes : Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t. Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t. À l’affirmatif, on ne contracte pas : Yes, there is (pas Yes, there’s (faux)).
Pour some, any et no, voir some et any.
L’accord
Le verbe s’accorde avec le premier nom qui suit :
There is a pen and two books on the desk. There are two books and a pen on the desk.
À l’oral, there’s suivi d’un pluriel est très fréquent (There’s lots of people), mais il reste fautif à l’écrit.
À tous les temps
| Temps | Singulier | Pluriel |
|---|---|---|
| prétérit | There was a problem. | There were many people. |
| present perfect | There has been an accident. | There have been changes. |
| past perfect | There had been a storm. | There had been several storms. |
| futur | There will be a party. | There will be lots of guests. |
| be going to | There’s going to be a storm. | There are going to be problems. |
| modaux | There might be a problem. There must be a mistake. | There could be delays. |
| used to | There used to be a cinema here. |
Après un modal ou au futur, be reste invariable : There will be two exams (et non there will are (faux)).
How many, how much
How many students are there in your class? (Combien d’élèves y a-t-il dans ta classe ?) How much sugar is there?
Voir much, many, a lot of.
There is ou it is ?
- There is présente quelque chose de nouveau, annonce son existence : There’s a letter for you.
- It is renvoie à quelque chose de déjà identifié : There’s a letter for you. It’s from your bank.
On dit It’s cold (il fait froid), It’s 6 o’clock (il est 6 heures) — jamais there is pour le temps qu’il fait ou l’heure.
